A2P2 Launches 2026 Ballot Campaign
Ann Arbor, Sept. 2 2025 – Ann Arbor for Public Power (A2P2) to draft ballot proposal to submit to Ann Arbor’s November 2026 election. The coalition of local residents and groups plans to collect over 5,000 signatures once the language is approved.
The ballot question would ask voters to create the board of the public electric utility, before taking over DTE infrastructure at a later date. This initiative would not create new taxes and would cost the voter nothing. In the future, a public power utility is highly likely to provide more reliable, more renewable, and less costly power to the Ann Arbor community. According to A2P2’s Executive Director Brian Geiringer, “The first question for voters is: do you want this? The plan is to create the board of the public utility in the 2026 election, before taking over poles and wires from DTE. Creating the board will cost the people of Ann Arbor zero dollars, and it will put the process of dumping DTE in motion.”
The group, which has been campaigning for public ownership of Ann Arbor’s electricity since 2020, anticipates heightened opposition from DTE Energy now that they’re going to the ballot. According to Geiringer, if the people of the city identify with and participate in the campaign for public power, it can best DTE. “A dedicated group of Ann Arborites has been working hard to expand A2P2’s capacity in the last few months. We feel it’s incredibly important that members of the public have a real voice in this process; that’s the only way to win. We are ready for this moment and call on everyone who is interested to join the fight.”
